Using tiggit with us.army.mil

A number of users have contacted me about making tiggit mail work with the US Army Mail Service. It would appear that the use of BlackBerry has been outlawed as the BIS/BES infrastructure is not considered sufficiently secure.

I don’t know whether tiggit mail will meet the requirements of the US DOD, but nevertheless I thought it worthwhile to write some notes on how to use tiggit mail with the us.army.mil mail service. Users should of course take appropriate steps to ensure that they are complying with all of the conditions of use of the mail server to which they are connecting.

You can see the details here. I guess it might help others who are having difficulties getting tiggit mail to work. Another document that might also be helpful to understand the features of tiggit mail is the user guide, which can be found here.

Their is no prohobition against the use of Blackerries to access AKO. However, in Feb 08, the Army blocked access to AKO from third party email aggregators (such as BIS), as they required storage of login information on a non-secure server. Access to AKO from Outlook or any other email progam via IMAP or POP is allowed, as long as the program or device stores the login information locally. I switched from a 8800 to a Windows Mobile in Feb 08 in order to maintain access to AKO, and it works flawlessly in that regard. I have followed TiggitMail since its inception as a means to return to a blackberry, and bought a Bold from overseas late in 08 anticipating I could swith back with Tiggit. However, at best, I have been able to only receive my AKO email with Tiggit, not send messages. I will try setting up my account with these instruction and post my results. Thanks!

It is important to make sure that singlePost is not selected when sending via the AKO mail service.

Well, following the instructions, I was able to set up my account and it works fine! I was able to successfuly send messages from it. I also set it up using the pre-configured account setup option in 1.1.16, which was extremely easy and quick. Thanks!

keeping in mind i havent tried it as of yet but am installing the trial on my storm but for tiggit to be AKO compatable it must be ssl capable and allow the user to change the ports used as long as these 2 things are met i dont see why tiggit shouldn’t work :)i will post results

There are a lot of AKO users that use tiggit mail, just follow the instructions in the welcome mail and you should be fine.

I am trying to use/install Tiggit mail with my Blackberry Bold and AKO. I am being told I am attempting to open a secure connection, but the server’s certificate is not trusted. I can either: Trust certificates, View Certificates or Close Connection. If I trust certificates it prompts me for a password (for what I do not know), if I choose view certificates it shows me a red x imap.us.army.mil and says Untrusted Cert Chain and Stale Chain Status and throughout the process it keeps mentioning these certificates and says they are not trusted. Can you help?
    Thanks,
    Jim
