version 1.1 – additional documentation

November 26, 2008

I have posted some of the new user documentation for version 1.1 in the pages section of this blog. There is a new section that give some hints and tips about how to configure to better suit various users workflow. Take a look at the pages section to the right of the blog.

version 1.1 – preview 2

November 25, 2008

tiggit mail version 1.1 preview 2 is now available for download to registered users

  • This version  significantly improves mailbox load performance, particularly when storing messages on the handheld SD Card.
  • It also reduces the number of threads that are available for tiggit mail to use, in an attempt to stop the device running out of threads (resulting in the menu and back buttons not working). It is still possible that users will see the not enough threads error that is typical of preview 1, but it should not be quite so catastrophic.
  • This version also fixes the migration start-up bug resulting in tiggit mail hanging the first time it runs.
  • This version reduces the intensity of the LED when alerting new messages.

Tunnel users no longer need to change tunnel settings. Please check that your tunnel setting is set to http://www.tiggit.com as the alternative tunnel is unreliable and used for development purposes.

Thanks to all those who emailed me with their immediate feedback. I would be interested to hear how much value you attribute to being able to store email on the SD Card rather than in memory. This should allow a lot more messages to be stored on the handheld. As a test today I downloaded over 1000 messages into my 8320 without any adverse performance impact.

Thanks also for the suggestions for improvements and additional features. They all sound good, and the little things will get added to version 1.1. Some of them are quite a lot of work and so may not make it. My target release date for 1.1 in a non-preview form is mid-December, and so there is not much time for adding new features.

Finally a note about 7000 series devices. At the moment version 1.1 only builds on the 4.2 API and later, which means 7000 series cannot run the preview. When 1.1 is fully released I will back port to 4.1, but there is a large overhead in doing this for each release, and so this will only be done once version 1.1 is finalised.

Registered users can download version 1.1.0, by clicking here and entering the email address that was originally used to register for tiggit mail. Exisiting license tokens will continue to work with this version.

Users should take care that any data that is stored within tiggit mail is kept elsewhere as this upgrade will cause all of the mailboxes to be erased. Prior to installing version 1.1, users should remove any earlier versions of tiggit mail.

tiggit mail version 1.1 available for preview

November 22, 2008

tiggit mail version 1.1 is now available for early adopter preview. The current build still has a number of defects, and some features are not yet complete, nevertheless given the demand for some of the features, and the benefit from expanding the number of users trying the new code, I am making tiggit mail available on a preview basis for currently licensed users. If you are interested in trying the preview, please read all of the information in this post.

The key new features of tiggit mail version 1.1 are

Easier workflow and navigation

  • single click to open mailboxes and messages
  • counters showing number of unread messages in each mailbox and folder
  • improved navigation via the folder screen, including option to open in folder view or inbox view
  • ability to nominate a sent folder
  • ability to nominate a trash folder
  • ability to mark a message unread after mailbox has been synchronized
  • support for IMAP flags
  • navigate-in from Address Book
  • outbox fast keys- delete done, i = return to inbox/default folder
  • inbox additional fast keys m = more, o = outbox from inbox

  • better outbox status reporting
  • fixes incorrect encoding of subject when replying/forwarding
  • fixes tunnel disconnects on large number of messages downloading

Performance

  • INBOX scrolling performance
  • improved user feedback when loading a mailbox from memory
  • copying message to outbox takes too long
Preview means that the software is provided for test and evaluation purposes only, and that users agree to provide information about the software, its functionality and performance. Preview also means that there is no documentation. Version 1.1.0 may change the way in which features work without explicit notification. Preview is only available for BlackBerry 8000 and 9000 series devices able to support BlackBerry API version 4.2 and later.

Tunnel users must change their tunnel setting from http://www.tiggit.com to tiggittunnel.dynalias.org failing to make this change will result in not being able to send messages using the singlePost mechanism. Challenge authentication mechanisms cannot currently be used with singlePost.

seamless wifi testing

November 21, 2008

I have just finished implementing the seamless-wifi code within version 1.1, but have come across a little problem. The BlackBerry simulators, although providing WiFi functionality do not simulate actual WiFi connections: i.e. it is possible to simulate the absence/presence of a wifi network, but it is not possible to route any data connections over the wifi connection.

I can test the presence/absence of the connection and confirm that the parameters are being passed to the the network objects correctly, but I cannot be certain that the wifi switching is happening as intended. This is an important test, especially for the tunnel – as tunnel connections should switch mid-session between wifi and cellular – i.e. if you are part way through a download on a cellular connection and the wifi connection becomes available, tiggit should switch to the wifi connection for the remainder of the download. This should make things faster and reduce data costs.

I wonder if anyone is prepared to take a pre-release of version 1.1 to work with me to confirm the wifi switching is actually working.
